I would've given the XP a static address Yuval, You have all Ethernet network components. Why is it that you aren't using a NAT router between the modem and the two computers? Chuck, Great post. You sound like you have Vista networking down pretty well. I thought that I did too until I tried to login to an old Windows Server.
I can get to the login screen on the Vista machine, type in a known good username and password, and I get the "Login unsuccessful" error. Other computers running XP have no trouble logging in to the old W2K server.
I have been told that Vista simply cannot log in to a W2K server by design. Is that true? Even when XP machines have no problem loging into an old W2K Server, Vista machines always reports "Login unsuccessful", even with known good usernames and passwords. Oddly, Vista will login to Linux servers and even Windows workstations. Stuck, Look at the authentication level issue , but look at it with the Vista computer being a client accessing resources not as a server providng and protecting shared resources.
Computers running Vista are perfectly capable of logging in to Windows Server , , or I have got a networking issue I can open shared drives of the xp computer in my vista laptop Saurabh, This is a question that neeeds to be explored in a forum conversation, in detail. It's reasonably moderated, so not a lot of spamming and trolling, and reasonably kept on topic and clean discussions.
Alternately, try my forum Nitecruzr Dot Net - Networking. Your post says "If you're adding a computer running Windows Vista to your network, you have to set it up as a server, so you can access it from your other computers.
Is that what you meant to imply? I don't want my Vista computer to be a server, I just want to be able to use it to access other PCs in my workgroup. Hello, First of all, excellent blog. The two computers can ping each other perfectly, share files and view each other on the network map. However when I try and create a LAN game on either computer - the other cannot see it and vice versa. I've even tried this with firewalls off to no avail.
Any suggestions? My router is a Thomson Speedtouch v7 and both computers can access the internet and each other perfectly. NC, What "viewer" do you use to "see" one computer from the other? Is it a function within "Age of Empires"? The first will be a proprietary function within "Age Of Empires".
The second will involve the Windows Networking "NT Browser", which is one of the objects of much mystery, which I describe elsewhere within this blog. See the links below. Post a Comment. However, the desktop was invisible in both directions.
I manually included the Vista IP address into the ZoneAlarm trusted sites on the emachine and, hey presto, I could access the Vista desktop. However, Vista would not allow access to the emachine running XP. If appears in the network map on Vista, but won't allow you to open it and it won't display when I refresh the available networks. Firstly, Sunthar u made a excellent post.
U are one of the few people who have documented a step-by-step method without assuming people know their way around Vista and XP. I need help with cracking this problem. I followed Sunthar's instructions word for word. The laptop could see only the windows media player files for the desktop and the GB NAS device but could not access the drives etc. The manufacturer for the NAS devices said they are not releasing a patch for old NAS products to run on vista so it will not work unless Microsoft does something or i do something to Vista dont we love these corporations that care.
However, here's the kicker. After i followed all the steps and after much struggle, i decided to turn off the firewall on the desktop and the laptop.
Now the desktop shows only itself in "View Workgroup Computers" and I can see and access everything also the NAS drives that are not supposed to work with vista according to the manufacturer. If i turn the Firewall on it reverts to the first problem. Any ideas on what u think i could try? Here is the latest update.
After doing all the step and turning off the firewalls on the laptop and desktop both PCs could see each other and all 3 NAS devices but the following happened From the Vista laptop I can see and access all NAS devices and drives Internal and external that are connected to the desktop. I can also see the Laptop from the "View Workgroup computers" but when i try to access any of the drives i get the message below.

Logon failure: The user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer. I've tried looking up help menus etc but don't seem to be getting anywhere with the problem.
I have the same problem listed below. Cygasmic wrote:. I spent today adding a couple of new Vista PCs to my network and experienced similar problems. The older XP machines could see each other. The 2 new Vista machines could see each other. But the XP machines couldn't see the Vista machines and vice-versa. Reading this thread made me do what I'd always intended to do but faster: uninstall the free Norton packages trials. That didn't instantly help.
I had to download and run the Norton Removal tool available here. At next start up the Vista machines could see the XP machines but the Vista machines were still invisible to the XP machines. That was because I hadn't properly renamed the worgroup on Vista but following the instructions available here. Now everything is honky-dory. Frankly that sort of deviousness is why so many people distrust Symantec.
That also solved all of my network problems. Anyway, had backups so all was good in that regard. Fresh build date June Don't even get me started about drivers, etc.
Anyway, had a total of 3 XP machines and 2 network printers on a small home business network set-up. All computers and printers HP. Win 3. WFW better yet.
Win95 was sweet. Win98 improved on that. WinME kind of a joke. And now we have Vista -- the mother hen that doesn't let you wander out of the yard. Total PITA. The "system" is now collapsing under its own weight. I am in the same boat you are! Please keep me posted. This really sucks!
I will let you know if I resolve the issue. A program can solve this issue. Another issue I have run into is the sharing of NAS drives.
After installing the critical updates my UNC shares were gone. You could ping, manage routers, NAS drives etc.. But not see them.
This enables network sharing to share files and more. How can I overcome this problem? Your email address will not be published. Home Network Setup connecting computers running windows 7, xp and vista Often, not all computers that you run may have the same windows OS.
