Extend the blade until four to six snap-off sections are visible, and then hold it flush against the surface of the door to trim the foam. Check packaging info for specific use instructions; some types come in two separate containers and require blending, while others are ready to use. Scoop up a small amount of auto-body filler with a plastic putty knife and smooth it over the hole.

Wipe off excess with the putty knife. Let the filler dry completely. Sand with grit sandpaper to remove dried auto body filler and create a seamless surface. Thread the mesh into the hole, holding the strings so not to lose the strip in the door cavity. Tie the strings to a wood slat that spans the hole, paint stirring sticks work great and can be picked up for free. Give the construction adhesive plenty of time to dry. Patch the hole with a quality wood filler.

Plan on doing it in a couple coats since the fist coat will want to press though the mesh and be nearly impossible to get smooth. Sand, prime and paint. Improve this answer.
